Don't Gamble with the Garment

Luke 23:34 states, "Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots."  Soldiers gambled for the garment of Jesus Christ.  This was not uncommon during the time of the Roman empire.  The soldiers would often cast lost for the garment of prisoners because if they rent the garment between several people, than it would lost its usefulness.  Therefore, the soldiers cast lots of the garment of Christ at the foot of the cross.  This in itself was the fulfillment of prophecy taken from Psalm 22:18.

Scripture also declared that there exists two more types of garments.   The sinner possesses a garment spotted by the flesh (Jude 23) and the Christian possesses a garment that is without spot or wrinkle (Ephesians 5:27).  The reason that the garment is without spot or wrinkle is because it originally belonged to Christ (cp. Isaiah 64:6 and Romans 4:11).

The church world today gambles with their garments.  They claim to be "Christians" yet they live a life full of sin.  They perform wicked deeds throughout the week and repent on Sunday and think that Christ actually has a place reserved for them in heaven.  These people not only put spots and wrinkles in their garments of salvation but they splatter it with the precious blood of Jesus Christ.  Hebrews 10:29 declared, "Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?"  We must be careful with our garments.  Christ is coming back any moment.  It is not time for us to gamble with our garments and create a bloody mess.  We must guard our garments and not gamble with them.
