The Death of Christ

The Death of Christ

Main Text:  Isaiah 53:9 “And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.”

Quotations:  It was the Church, not the world, that crucified Christ.  ~Karl Barth~

Death cannot harm me because it is a stingless bee: its stinger is lodged in Christ.
~Peter J. Kreeft, Love is Stronger than Death~

I.               Introduction
a. Today’s world is sinful and will go to hell unless it accepts its Savior.
b.When man sinned, there arose the need of a Savior
c. There existed a need for an appropriate Sacrifice for sin
                                                          i.      God illustrated the need for a blood sacrifice for sin in the Garden of Eden.
1.Genesis 3:21  “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.”
ii.      Adam and Eve passed down the requirement of the blood sacrifice for sin orally.
1.There may exist no Biblical verse that one can point to for evidence, but Abel and Cain knew that the blood offering was required for sin.
a. Genesis 4:1-7  “And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.
2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
3 ¶ And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
6 ¶ And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
b. 7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.”
TRANSITION:  THE JEWS ANTICIPATED THE MESSIAH TO IMMEDIATELY ESTABLISH HIS KINGDOM, THEY FAILED TO SEE THROUGH THE TYPOLOGIES OR SHADOWS OF THE TABERNACLE AND REALIZE THAT THE MESSIAH MUST FIRST DIE FOR THEM (Hebrews 8:5; 10:1).  THEY ALSO FAILED TO REALIZE THAT THE MESSIAH MUST FIRST DIE FOR THEM AS WAS LAID OUT IN OLDTESTAMENT PROPHECIES.
II.         The Promise of Christ’s death
a. Through the veil of the sacrifices that God instituted under the Mosaic Law, there exists evidence that it was necessary for the Messiah to die for a sacrifice for mankind.
                                                          i.      The male animals that were sacrificed represented Christ as being sacrificed in the strength of His youth, while the sacrifices symbolized His power to overcome sin.
1.Christ was born circa 4-6 BC; died 33 AD
ii.      an animal that was without blemish could only be sacrificed.  This also symbolized Christ because He was the perfect sacrifice and without spot or blemish.
1.I Peter 1:18-19  “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:”
iii.      The fat of the offering also depicted Christ in the sense that He was physically perfect and in good health when He was arrested to be put on trial.
iv.      The burnt offering typified the submissiveness and obedience of Christ to fulfill the Father’s will by dying on the cross.
1.Luke 22:42  “Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done”
                                                       v.      Thus, His death is typified in the Tabernacle through the animal sacrifices.
b.David prophesied about the coming Messiah
c. In Psalm 22 David prophesied that Christ would suffer a humiliating death
d.David eluded to the fact that the Messiah would die when he wrote prophetically that the Messiah would commit His Spirit into the hands of the Father
                                                          i.      Psalm 31:5Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.”
e. Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah
                                                          i.      Isaiah 53:12 “Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.”
f.   John the Baptist prophesied that Christ would die as a sacrifice for man’s sin when he referred to Christ as the LAMB of God.
                                                          i.      John 1:29-31 “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.”
ii.      One of the animals used in the sin offering was that of a lamb
1.Thus, Christ was the spotless Lamb of God to die to redeem mankind and the entire world (Revelation 5:  The 7 Sealed Book) from sin.”
g. Christ directly informed His disciples that He was going to die
                                                          i.      Matthew 20:17-19  “And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them,
18 Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,
19 And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.”
ii.      John 2:19-21 “Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.  20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
21 But he spake of the temple of his body.”
iii.      John 12:30-33  “Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.
31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.
33  This he said, signifying what death he should die.”
iv.      John 18:31-32  “Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.”
III.    The Prophetic fulfillment of Christ’s death
a. Betrayed by a friend
                                                          i.      Psalm 41:9  “Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.”
ii.      Matthew 10:4  “Mt 10:4 Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.”
b.Sold for 30 pieces of silver
                                                          i.      Zechariah 11:12  “And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver”
ii.      Matthew 26:15  “And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.”
c. Money to be thrown in God’s house
                                                          i.      Zechariah 11:13a  “And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them…”
ii.      Matthew 27:5a  “And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple,…”

14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.
15 Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.
16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?
18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.

ii.       46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
TRANSITION:  EITHER THESE PROPHECIES WERE EITHER GIVEN BY INSPIRATION OF GOD OR THE PROPHETS JUST WROTE THEM AS THEY THOUGHT THAEY SHOULD BE.  IN SUCH A CASE THE PROHECTS HAD JUST ONCE CHANCE IN 1017 OF HAVING THEM COME TRUE IN ANY MAN, BUT THEY ALL CAM E TRUE IN CHRIST.  THIS MEANS THAT THE FULFILLMENT OF 8 OF THESE PROPHECIES ALONE PROVES THAT GOD INSPIRED THE WRITING OF THOSE PROPHECIES TO A DEFINITENESS WHICH LACKES ONLY ONE CHANCE IN 1017 OF BEING ABSOLUTE.
PETER STONER IN SCIENCE SPEAKS CONSIDERED 48 PROPHCIES AND SAID, “WE FIND THE CAHNCE TTHAT ANY ONE MAY FULFILLED ALL 48 PROPHECIES TO BE 1 IN 10157.”[1]
IV.   The proof for Christ’s death
a. Jesus was actually dead
                                                          i.      Jesus was not drugged (p. 120)
                                                     ii.      Heavy loss of blood
1.Suffered 5 major wounds between 9 in the morning and sunset (p. 120)
a. Crown of thorns
b.Nails
c. Loss of blood in the Garden of Gethsemane
d.Whipped
e. Nails in wrists and feet seeredd major nerves
iii.      Side pierced with spear and water and blood flowed out (would have been fatal blow)
1.Done by Roman soldiers
a. They knew how to kill
b.They knew when someone was dead
2.Spear would have pierced through Christ’s right lung and the pericardium and the heart, thereby ensuring death
iv.      Legs never broken because the Roman soldier knew he was dead
1.It would have been his life if Christ was not dead
                                                       v.      Jesus was embalmed and placed in a grave
1.Even if He did awake, Christ could have never:
a.  unwrapped Himself
b.rolled bthe stone back up the side of its carved-out track
c. overcome the guards
d.escape unnoticed
b.The Purpose for Christ’s death
                                                          i.      Christ died for our sickness and informities
1.Isaiah 53:5 “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
2.I Peter 2:24 “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.”
ii.      Christ came to Redeem all that was lost in the creation
1.John 1:29 “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world
iii.      Redeem mankind from sin and to restore God’s lost fellowship with mankind to restore mankind’s eternality
1.Romans 5:12 “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”
2.John 10:10b “…I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
3.John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
V.         Conclusion
a. The evidence has been presented this morning
                                                          i.      The death of Christ has been promised from before the beginning of time because Revelation 13:8 states that Christ was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
ii.      “The atonement is the center of gravity in Christian life and thought because it is the center of gravity in the NT, as a mere census of referrences immediately demonstrates.  According to the apostolc preaching and droctrine, the significacne of Jesus Christ does not lie isupremely in His person or ministry or teaching: it lies supremely in his death upon the cross.  In the NT, to be sure, that event is never viewed in isolation from His person, His ministry, and His teaching; nor is it viewed apart from His resurrection.  …It is the event of Christ’s death which the NT consistently underscores as all0important, and his dath interpreted nto as a martyrdom, burough to pass by a miscarriage of justice, but as the offering of a redemptive sacrifce.”[2]  ~Vernon C. Grounds~
iii.      Man may try to deny the very existence of Christ, but evidence proves that Christ existed as a man and that He actually died
iv.      We learned today that Christ died for a purpose
1.He died that you and I could know Him and not go to hell
                                                       v.      The decision is ours today
1.If you have asked Christ to forgive all of your sins and you have repented of your sins and no longer do them, than you can rest in surety knowing that you have a heavenly home awaiting you
2.However, if you do not know Christ this morning, now is your opportunity to accept Him as your personal Savior
a. If you do not accept Him this morning, you may never receive another opportunity to repent of your sins and accept Christ as your personal Savior
b.Time is short and none of us are promised any certain amount of time
c. James 4:14 “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”
