Genesis 5:2 states, "Male and
female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the
day when they were created."
As we read Genesis chapter five, we
realize that we are about to read a chapter concerning genealogies. This
is one of those chapters that many people "speed read" through just to
read it. However, they often overlook many interesting tidbits that God
has for us. As the reader examines verses one and two of Genesis chapter
five, one cannot ignore the verb tense that God uses in referring to Adam and
Eve. He referred to both of them with plural verbs. What does this
have to do with Eve's name? Well, God
declared that He called THEIR NAME Adam. I just heard a big
"WHOA!" out there as in unbelief. Adam named Eve right?
Yes he did in Genesis chapter three and verse twenty.[1]
However, God did not view Eve by the name that Adam gave her but He referred to
her by Adam’s name. Why? Marriage was the first institution of
God. He created and ordained it. God placed man as the head of the
family. If Adam never partook of the
fruit, he still would have been held accountable for Eve’s actions. God did not blame woman for the Fall but He
placed the blame on man. Therefore, when
God called Eve’s name Adam, He was acknowledging her role as being subservient to
her husband yet being one. God referring
to Eve through Adam’s name also reveals the fact that they are one flesh.[2] Husband and wife are not two separate
entities but are one and God views them as such.
